Longhouse Publishing in Mission BC publishes quality books on Aboriginal and
cultural themes. We draw on over 50 years of combined experience
and knowledge on Aboriginal culture, writing and production. We
are particularly sensitive to the cultural and spiritual
protocols of Aboriginal people, and we have a deep understanding
of the social and political realities that we all face today.

The poems were translated from the Halq’eméylem language into English over a 4-year period, between 1911 and 1915 and represent the only work of ‘classic’ Halq’eméylem literature-in-translation. The poems tell the story of the Beginning of the World, the Legends of Xá:ls—the Great Transformer who walked this earth in the distant past to put things right—and stories of other human endeavours and emotions. Songs of Y-Ail-Mihth, the Ancient Singer
Sepass Poems in Oral Tradition – Without a written language these extraordinary “songs of the ancient singer” were recited to memory by the one trained to carry the culture of his people—Chief William K’HHalserten Sepass. The poems have now been recorded and the CD will be available to purchase soon.
The Sepass Family and Longhouse Publishing are pleased to announce these extraordinary Poems have been recorded and produced as they were meant to be—in the oral tradition, but in the English language. And in this oral tradition, cultural teachings and spiritual values bring this ancient history alive! To listen to sample poem, "Syewá:l, Mankind" click here
